HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF ON A MOTORCYCLE?

When it comes to motorcycle gear, you probably understand the importance of helmets. Helmets protect against serious head injuries, but they are only a portion of the motorcycle gear you need when riding.

AARP suggests that you wear a variety of protective gear on the road.

PROTECTING YOUR SKIN

On a motorcycle, your injuries in an accident may be worse than a passenger in a vehicle. Road rash can cause severe complications, but if you wear proper gear, you can prevent it. You should have a jacket that protects you during an accident. Thick leather helps you slide on pavement and protects against abrasions. Leather and Kevlar pants serve the same purpose.

You should also choose tall boots that cover your ankles. Your boots protect you from debris on the road and hot pipes. Since you need to grip the footpegs, you need boots with a low heel and non-skid soles.

PROTECTING YOUR EYES

Riders who have a full helmet and face shield do not have to worry about extra eye protection. You should have sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays and assist your sight on bright days. Choose shatterproof glasses to avoid glass or plastic harming your eyes in the case of an accident. Goggles and glasses can help keep dirt and wind out of your eyes while on the road.

To further protect yourself on a motorcycle, consider attaching reflective tape to your helmets and clothing. Reflectors help you become more visible to passing vehicles. If you have a face shield, defog it to prevent sight problems on the road.
