If you were in a motorcycle accident, one of the most common injuries you may suffer is a traumatic brain injury or a TBI.
According to the FDA, any sudden movement of the head can cause the brain to bounce in the skull and break blood vessels or injure brain cells. Mild TBIs may result in little more than a headache or short loss of consciousness, while a severe TBI may result in long-term unconsciousness.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A TBI?
There are a variety of symptoms that may indicate a TBI. For more mild cases, you may experience dizziness, ringing in your ears, blurred vision, behavioral changes, confusion, and headaches.
However, if you experience nausea, vomiting, weakness in your limbs, slurred speech or problems thinking or learning new information, you could have a severe or moderate TBI. No matter the type of TBI, you should seek medical attention at the first sign of a head injury.
HOW CAN DOCTORS DIAGNOSE A TBI?
To diagnose a TBI, doctors have to perform a medical exam. They will assess your ability to think, coordination, eye movement, sensory function, motor function and reflexes. Next, the professionals can use CT scans and MRIs to try to detect a TBI. A scan may be able to detect bleeding or issues that require medical intervention.
If you suffer a head injury or sudden jolt in a car accident and experience any of the TBI symptoms, there is a fair chance that you have a head injury. Some TBIs can have long-term effects on your health.
