What should you know about road rash?

As summer continues into the warmest and sunniest month, many motorcyclists take to the road to enjoy the good weather. Unfortunately, this also means there is an upswing in motorcycle crashes and related injuries.

One of the most common injuries that do not get enough focus is road rash. Though many overlook road rash to focus on issues like spinal or brain injuries, road rash can also cause you a world of problems.

What is road rash?

Healthline takes a look at road rash, an injury that affects many people after crashes. Road rash is a type of friction burn that occurs when your bare flesh meets something hard and flat. In this case, that is usually asphalt or other roadway surfaces, hence the name. Most often, it occurs when motorcyclists end up pitched off of their bikes and sent skidding across the road.

Some forms of road rash are relatively minor and only require minimal treatment, though even minor damage can result in prolonged periods of healing and potential scarring. But more severe forms of road rash can have long-lasting or even permanent health repercussions.

What impact does sit have?

First, road rash leaves you susceptible to quick and brutal infections. With layers of the skin removed, it allows for plenty of bacteria to enter the blood and lower layers of tissue. If this does not get quick treatment, you can see infection set in within hours. Severe infections like gangrene or even sepsis may also follow.

Road rash can extend far down into the deep layers of tissue too, resulting in permanent disfiguration or nerve damage that can change or remove your ability to feel things. Some nerve damage can also cause constant, chronic pain, which may even interfere with your ability to work. Thus, road rash is often more of a life-changing risk than anyone anticipates.
