HOW DO MOTORCYCLE HELMETS PROTECT RIDERS?

On Behalf of | Mar 24, 2021 | Firm News

If you ride a motorcycle, you already know the many risks that face you. Even responsible, conscientious riders sustain injuries after crossing paths with a careless driver. Injuries are usually more severe for motorcyclists, as you lack the protection of a passenger vehicle.

While you cannot prevent all accidents, you can prepare for them. According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, a quality helmet can protect you from serious injuries. That is why riders must wear them every time they are on the road.

COMPONENTS OF MOTORCYCLE HELMETS

Motorcycle helmets contain four components:

OUTER SHELL

Shells are usually made from polycarbonate or a similar material. While designed to be tough and durable, shells also compress when impacted to evenly distribute the force over the helmet.

LINER

The liner works in conjunction with the outer shell. It also absorbs the impact to prevent riders from experiencing a major head injury.

COMFORT PADDING

Padding ensures the helmet fits well and feels comfortable. The more comfortable it is, the more likely it is that riders will wear it.

CHIN STRAP

The chin strap keeps the helmet on your head during a crash. Fasten it every time you ride, even if you are only going a short distance.

HOW THEY PROTECT YOU

A helmet can minimize the effects of a serious crash. While injuries might still occur, a helmet can lessen their severity. A serious motorcycle crash is not only life-threatening, it can also lead to major health complications and brain damage. Wearing a helmet may mitigate these effects depending on the accident.

When buying a helmet, make sure it is the right size and fit for your head. Also, steer clear of novelty helmets, such as those with protrusions. These helmets do not offer the same protection as those that comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation standards.
