A motorcyclist, like a driver of any other type of vehicle, has the responsibility to operate their vehicle safely and to follow the laws of the road. However, a motorcyclist does face greater risks due to the actions of other drivers given the inherent lack of protection around them.
From a parked car door opening in their path to a driver turning in front of them, even the safest rider experiences significant dangers when getting on their motorcycle.
Riders of all ages share the risk
Records from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration make it clear that motorcyclists of all ages experience dangers when riding, contrary to the stereotype that younger riders may be more reckless. In the five years spanning from 2014 through 2018, more bikers in their 50s and older died in accidents than in any other age group. In that span of time, 36 riders 50 and older were killed compared to 30 riders in their 20s, 26 riders in their 30s and 19 riders in their 40s.
Helmets help, but may not prevent all fatalities
A motorcycle helmet provides essential protection but may unfortunately be unable to save every life. In 2017, 20 out of 27 Nebraska motorcyclists killed in crashes were known to be wearing helmets at the time of their accidents. The same goes for 18 of 20 killed riders in 2014.
