No workplace is safe: Know your rights if you get hurt on the job

Most employers in Nebraska are required to carry workers' compensation insurance. While not every job is as dangerous as the next, the reality is that everyone can get hurt on the job.

Some of the most common injuries that happen in workplaces can happen literally anywhere. Slip, trip and fall accidents, for instance, can happen in an office or in a construction zone. Electrocutions can happen in an office bathroom or as a result of installing new outlets without turning off the breakers.

Did you know that there is no truly safe job?

The fact is that there is simply no job that is without its risks. Office workers face different hazards than construction teams, but both parties can end up with workplace injuries.

Whether an injury is related to repetitive motions or a sudden, serious accident on the job, it's important that your employer is notified right away and that you receive medical care. Your employer may have information on the medical office where you can be seen, or if it's an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

After receiving medical care, your employer should help you file a workers' compensation claim. If they refuse to do so or do not carry workers' compensation, then you may be in a position to seek legal help to begin a lawsuit or to force your employer to comply with federal workers' compensation laws.

Our site has more on workers' compensation and what you should do if you're hurt on the job. Every worker deserves care after they're hurt at work.
