Car vs. semi crash leads to 2 injuries in dense fog

In dangerous weather conditions, it can be difficult for large trucks to stop. That was part of what caused a serious crash on Highway 15 in Nebraska. A car vs. semi accident resulted in one person being life-flighted to Bryan Hospital.

The crash happened at around 1:15 p.m. near Western. A semitruck was traveling north when it struck a silver Jeep SUV. This caused the SUV to enter a ditch on the side of the southbound lane.

The two vehicles came to a stop around 1,000 feet apart, showing the intensity of the crash. The Jaws of Life had to be used to remove the driver of the Jeep from the vehicle. He was then life-flighted to the hospital for treatment. The semi driver was also transported for medical treatment, though it was believed that any injuries he suffered were nonlife-threatening.

As a result of this crash, the highway was shut down for around an hour-and-a-half. Investigators have said that dense fog may have played a role in the collision, and a Dense Fog Advisory had been issued for Saline, Jefferson and surrounding counties. That advisory was not set until 3:13 p.m. that afternoon, which was around two hours after the crash, so it's not clear if that would apply to the case.

If it is considered as a potential cause of the crash, authorities may take into consideration that visibility conditions were less than a half mile in some places throughout the state, which would have made it extremely difficult to see other drivers on the roadways.
