Two wheels means twice the safety

For the die-hard, avid motorcyclists, this may be the last week of the year to take your bike out for one last spin. Riding in mid-November is a rare, if ever, sight. Drivers may not be expecting you to be out on the roads this late in the year either. This is why extra safety precautions should be considered.

Safety tip #1

WEAR A HELMET. By law in Nebraska, all operators and passengers must wear a helmet when the vehicle is in motion. It is also in your best interest to wear one regardless if it is the law or not. Helmets prevent 37 percent of cyclist deaths per year and reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury by 67 percent.

Safety tip #2

Wear safety gear. Safety gear can help prevent eye injury, road burns in the event of an accident along with your hands and other body parts from road debris. Consider these safety gear options before setting out on your ride:

  • Protective eyewear
  • Gloves
  • Sturdy boots
  • Jeans or padded pants
  • Jacket or padded jacket

Now-a-days, manufactures provide a lot of options for safety and preventative gear for riders. It is easy to find jackets with padding to help protect your vital organs from injury in the event of a crash. There are also padded pants to help prevent road rash as well.

Safety tip #3

Be defensive. Don't always assume that drivers can see you. One of the best ways to ensure your safety, is to look for potential distracted drivers. It can be easy to get lost in the beautiful scenery of ride, but always be on the lookout for other vehicle operators.

Safety tip #4

Be prepared. You never know what may happen, so be as prepared as you can in the case of an incident. The DMV suggests having a first aid kit and a fully charged cell phone. Pack rain gear or plan to be home before any bad weather starts. Motorcycling in bad weather can be very dangerous.

Safety tip #5

Have a general plan of where you will be riding or keep your family/friends updated on where you are throughout your ride. This is especially important if you are taking a solo journey. Whether it is for a few hours or for days, keep someone updated on your whereabouts.

The best way to ensure your safety is to take it into your own hands. Some situations are out of your control. Winter is the best time to stock up on safety gear and to prepare for the next season of riding. Cyclists have significantly less protection than other vehicle operators do, which is why serious injury can occur in an accident.

If you are the victim of a motorcycle accident, it is wise to speak to a personal injury lawyer who specializes in these kinds of accidents. Often time's drivers fail to look twice for motorcyclists or fail to even look at all. Negligent drivers usually want to blame the rider for driving carelessly. This is why an attorney may be helpful in proving your case.
